NOTE 2: Some very early lanterns, like the 242, did not use air stems. If your pump plunger has a hole in the top center, you have an air stem. If the pump plunger stem is solid then your lantern does not have the same type check valve or pump plunger, nor does it have an air stem. You can email me about doing a conversion if you want to use the lantern.
NOTE 3: For safety reasons I recommend using the new replacement cap (220C1401) on appliances that are to be used. The new caps are designed to direct discharge downward and away from flame if unscrewed while the tank or fount is pressurized. The old caps, if uscrewed while pressurized, may allow fuel to be released up and/or out, resulting in an explosion. Accoringly, I recommend these replacement gaskets for display use only. Coleman no longer offers new filler caps for the 242 and 243 series lanterns.
